THE STORY: At the end of World War II, the victors split the Korean Peninsula into two occupation zones. The 38th Parallel divided the country between the United States-backed South Korea and the communist North Korea, supported by the Soviets. As the Cold War took shape in the early years after World War II, the two opposing ideologies stared each other down across this artificial border. The uneasy peace lasted only five years.
On the morning of June 25, 1950, hundreds of artillery guns in the North opened fire on the South. Seven infantry divisions supported by 150 Soviet T-34 tanks raced across the border. The unprepared South Koreans - aided by 500 Americans with the Korean Military Advisory Group (KMAG) - were quickly overrun. The newly formed United Nations and its Security Council were put through their first real test. The UN passed Resolution 84 on July 7th condemning the aggression by North Korea and furnished as much aid as necessary to South Korea to repel the invasion. The UN forces were comprised primarily of American and South Korean forces fighting the North Koreans, who were supplied with equipment from the Soviet Union and later with men from China. The Korean War had officially begun; the Cold War grew hot.
Will you join the Americans and South Korea fighting to stop the spread of communism in this first engagement of the Cold War? Or will you enlist with the North Korean Army and China seeking to unify the Korean Peninsula under one banner? Join Mission Masters Scenario Paintball Games on May 22, 2010 at Three Rivers Paintball Park, Freedom, PA, for an all new mil-sim scenario based upon an oft forgotten war in American history.
THE TEAMS:
TEAM WHITE United States The United States contributed the largest portion of the troops and supplies to the Korean conflict. An overwhelming majority of the American soldiers were scarcely older than 18; they had signed up at the end of World War II during the post-war peace expecting light occupation duty in the beaten Japan or Germany. In the five years since the end of the war, military training and discipline had become soft and as a result the Americans fared poorly in their first engagements of the Korean War. Their saving grace early in the war was the excellent American leadership. General Douglas MacArthur, hero of WWII in the Pacific was placed in charge of the conflict. The Americans were equipped primarily with WWII surplus weapons including M1 Garands, M1 Carbines, BARs, and Browning 30cal machine guns. However their armor had improved greatly with the new M46 Patton medium tank.
South Korea (ROK) In addition to the large US Military presence during the war, South Korea (Republic of Korea or ROK) also pledged a large portion of the troops to fight the war. Generally the South Korean troops were less trained, skilled, and effective in battle than their American counterparts, however due to fighting for the defense of their home country, they often fought with great passion and valor.
TEAM RED North Korea At the end of WWII, the Soviet Union occupied the northern half of Korea and set up a communist government led by Kim Il-sung. Kim was looked upon favorably by the Soviet occupiers for his guerrilla raids on the Japanese during WWII and for being a staunch supporter of communist ideals. The North Korean Army was supplied with weapons from the Soviet Union and neighboring China. The North spearheaded their initial attack of the war with Soviet WWII-surplus T-34 tanks. Later in the war China also provided nearly a million men to swell the ranks of the North Korean Army.
China Sharing the Yalu River as a border and a communist style government with North Korea, the People's Republic of China, not surprisingly, felt threatened by the UN and US actions in the Korean Peninsula. On October 2, 1950, China officially joined the war, though it had been supporting the North with supplies since the beginning. The Chinese fought not with great tactics, maneuvering, and skill but rather with massive infantry attacks thrown head on into the American machine guns, attempting to overwhelm the Americans through shear numbers, and the tactic often worked.
