BATTLEFIELD 1944 by Mission Masters May 14, 2011 Three Rivers Paintball, Freedom, PA
THE STORY: Through 1942 and early 1943, the bulk of fighting in WWII was centered on ousting Rommel’s Afrika Corps from their defensive positions in North Africa. Through famous battles and operations such as Torch, Kasserine Pass, and El Alamein, the Allies eventually contained Rommel to a small pocket in Tunisia. With their backs to the Mediterranean, the Germans had no choice but to give up the fight in North Africa and retreat. The Axis forces had been pushed out of North Africa and were contained within the European mainland. The next step in the Allies’ plan for victory in Europe was the taking of Italy which British Prime Minister Winston Churchill famously dubbed “the soft underbelly of Europe.” If the heart Europe could be taken via an invasion through Italy, it would avoid a risky and potentially costly amphibious assault of France across the English Channel. The first steppingstone for invading Italy was the liberation of the island of Sicily. Under the command of leaders such as Bernard Montgomery, Omar Bradley, and George Patton, the Allies accomplished this feat in a mere 2 months, bringing about the surrender of the Italian forces.
With Italy’s surrender, American and British troops were able to land on Italian soil in September 1943 with easy before the German occupation could set up defenses. Progress up the peninsula eventually slowed just south of Rome as the Germans used the mountains in the area to set up an impenetrable defense known as the Gustav Line. At the beginning of 1944, the two opposing forces were at a stalemate. It would take a daring plan for the Allies to break the German line in Italy. The soft underbelly had turned out to be “one tough gut.” Allied commanders realized that Italy was not the key to liberating Europe. Instead, an invasion of unprecedented scale would have to be mounted elsewhere if the Germans were to be conquered.
On May 14, historic World War II campaigns of 1944 unfold Mission Masters style... will you join the Allied 82nd and 101st Airborne forces attempting to dislodge and defeat German forces to liberate Europe, or will serve the Axis empire as German Wehrmacht and Fallschirmjäger elite forces in an effort to dominate and defend conquered territory of Europe? Join Mission Masters at Three Rivers Paintball on May 14 for fun-filled scenario paintball action based upon famous battles of 1944.
THE TEAMS: TEAM BLUE Airborne 82nd and Airborne 101st Divisions: Airborne forces are military units, usually light infantry, transported by aircraft and 'dropped' into battle. Thus they can be placed behind enemy lines, and have an ability to deploy almost anywhere with little warning. The formations are limited only by the number and size of their aircraft, so given enough capacity a huge force can appear "out of nowhere" in minutes.
TEAM RED Wehrmacht: The defensive might of Germany from 1935 to 1945; Unified armed forces comprised of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Translated: Wehren, to defend and die; Macht, the might/power. Fallschirmjäger: Light elite paratrooper infantry of the German Army known as the "Green Devils" by the Allied forces they fought against.
