I'm trying to make a comparison that most guys can relate to on some level. Those of us that really love our cars put a lot of time and money into it and some even farther then that. Those kind of guys make custom cars that in some ways can be considered art in some extent of the imagination.

For paintball players in all it's forms and even gun guys, our guns can be be put in the same way. For those of us that own firearms and want to do more with them, it's change out the stock and stuff for anything from better handling to better performance. Paintball markers can be considered the same because players change the barrels or may go with a different spring or performance piece depending on the marker. We can all say we have seen markers, guns and cars that caught our eye at one point or another. Forums like this allow us to share our creations with others. Our rides, guns or markers...they can be works of art.

Any thoughts to this piece?

If you are going to go that route, it is more than just an upgraded stock or performance piece.  If you really want to talk about art and how it applies to the paintball industry you're going to have to go beyond the mil-sim world.  It may be  uncomfortable for you, but maybe it will allow you to see the light.

People who are really involved in paintball make their marks on the game by making their own art.  From their attire, to accessories, and to the marker.  Look at the color schemes that most people represent. You have a lot of the basic colors, but then there are those who choose to take it to the next level with custom color schemes, or lazering, and that is where you will find the art.  Riddler and Toter are two most prominent on this board that really value the art of their markers and would be prime examples.

Going off that and getting back into the mil-sim world, if you look around "art" is everywhere.  It is in the camo styles that players choose to wear, and in even in their design of their marker which you touched on.  But it goes further than that too in this aspect, look at the players that choose to get involved in designing tanks and launcher, it is their own idea brought out into a design and it has a touch of what they feel is art to it.

So yes, art is in paintball, but it is everywhere, not just in an upgrade like you mentioned.

I was trying to be general on the idea. I'm just saying because a friend of mine that's a car guy put a lot of work into his car the same way I do with my marker. I will say that I wasn't just referring to markers in general. I've hered of speedball markers that were modded for the woods and woods markers that were used in speedball. At the time of writing, it sounded all general to what guys like.

No such thing as woodsball guns or speedball guns - there are only paintball guns, and they don't care where they're used.

Hey, thanks!

Regarding the "can a paintball gun be art?" query, I'd say within the paintball community, absolutely.  Beyond that, probably not.  Cars are much the same way - appreciation tends to come from enthusiasts.

Yes I totally agree with you Riddler.  Like I said before, on this board you can look at your collection and see that it is definitely possible.  Anyone that has been in the game and can appreciate paintball for what it is can appreciate the collection you have built up.

Riddler, I see what you mean as it comes from enthusiasts in that particular dynamic. As gar as the speed and woods thing went. The first post, I was being general yet because I do the woods and mil-sim stuff the general thing was that I was referring to woods markers. After the last game I did, I'm seeing markers more in general concepts with the exceptions of those specialty markers.

Mild necropost.  I don't know how I missed this earlier...

'If wisdom grew on trees, you sir, would be a bush.'

As stated, a paintball marker doesn't care where it's shot - only that it is shot.

Can markers be considered art? Maybe. It won't garner as much appreciation outside of the sport but I have had non-paintball players comment on some of my markers and how nice the colors look. I don't think they'd call them 'art', but they can appreciate the detail. All of the things your talking about are just hobbies, by definition. When we have hobbies we build off them and put time and money into them, regardless of what they are.

And why 'guys'? Goes for 'gals', too.

true since we all have played with Devon and I have played with many other female paintball players as well. You should see the amount of female players at Living Legends and there were a good few at Fulda this year as well.

That too was also a generalization because when you use the word "guys" you can also refer to a group (ladies included) Yet paintball is still pretty much male doninated butthe general intent was to say that guys do take a lot of pride in what they do and in the case od players, it's the time, money and love that is invested into their markers.
