THE STORY:
The jungle was quiet. Too quiet. All around me, the deafening silence called out like a siren, a warning that all was not well. Sweat streamed down my face and stung my eyes. My hands were slick against the trusty M16 rifle. In the distance, thunderous impacts from American artillery strikes and air raids raining down on our enemies distorted reality. Tension mounted as easily as the repressive heat. I looked to my left and noticed that Smitty had a white-knuckle grip on his M16 as well, anticipating the Viet Cong’s next move. Suddenly, the entire jungle seemed to rise up against us as the familiar sound of whistles rang out.
* * *
The Americans are on the other side of the brush, not forty yards away, I recall thinking. I was trained to fight in the jungle, to use it as a weapon against any enemy. We’d picked away the American war machine through propaganda and guerrilla tactics, dissolved their methods by offering them a war they couldn’t win. Despite these efforts, the Americans continued to fight. There they were, directly ahead of us, as I’d seen so many times before. They seemed squeamish, unsure, unable to comprehend the jungle’s secrets as silence descended upon them. I gripped my AK-47 tightly, accustomed to the heat and sure of my skills. Suddenly, the commander’s whistle blew, signaling the attack. I screamed as I fired through the brush into the unsuspecting Americans.
* * *
The distinctive crack of AK-47 gunfire erupted from a line of dense undergrowth. The Americans hit the dirt just as they’d been trained to do. The bullets whizzed over their heads, but they immediately returned fire from their M16s. Shouts and cries mingled with the din of gunfire. An American soldier shouted, “Grenade!” The resulting blast showered the area in debris.
The barrage of bullets quickly came to a halt and a brief reprieve settled over the fighters. The Viet Cong sprang from their hiding places and – leading with their guns tipped with bayonets – rushed toward the Americans with fury in their eyes. The Americans, in turn, rose up and sent another maelstrom of bullets into the rushing throng and simultaneously reached for their bayonets.
